U research chief on Wisconsin short list

With a long career at the University of Wisconsin, Tim Mulcahy is a finalist to become its chancellor.

Last update: May 7, 2008 - 8:18 PM

Tim Mulcahy, the University of Minnesota administrator credited with boosting the university's research efforts and its relationship with private business, is one of four finalists vying to become the next chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

As the University of Minnesota's vice president of research, Mulcahy is charged with overseeing about $600 million in research projects each year. He is also the point man in restoring the school's ailing efforts to turn its research into profitmaking ventures.

Mulcahy, who turned 57 this week, was unavailable for comment. If he gets and accepts the position, it would be a blow to the university.

"There is probably no greater honor for our institution than to have key members of our leadership team wooed by our peers," university President Robert Bruininks said in a statement. "Dr. Mulcahy has done a remarkable job refocusing and strengthening our research enterprise, and we're very hopeful he'll ultimately decide to stay here. However, his talent, experience and ability to get things done would make him an exceptional chancellor for UW-Madison, which is an exceptional career opportunity.

"We'll certainly celebrate if he gets this position -- but celebrate even harder if he doesn't."

Lured to Minnesota in 2005, Mulcahy had spent 20 years at the flagship campus of the University of Wisconsin system.

He was a medical school professor and an associate dean for graduate studies. He left as the associate vice chancellor for research policy.

Mulcahy will compete against Gary Sandefur, the dean of Wisconsin's College of Letters and Sciences; Biddy Martin, the provost at Cornell University, and Rebecca Blank, former dean of the Gerald Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan. The four candidates are vying to replace current Chancellor John Wiley, who announced he will resign from the administrative position in September.

The four finalists will spend much of next week in Madison meeting with faculty, staff, students and members of the search committee. Each candidate will also be present at a separate public reception. Mulcahy's will be on Wednesday.

The recommended candidate is expected to be named later this month. The hire is then expected to be approved by the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents when it meets June 5-6 in Milwaukee.
