Anglers heading out for Saturday's fishing opener will want to check to be sure they will have boat access to their favorite lake or river. Some public ramps will be closed or under repair after late-season snow and cool conditions delayed some fix-ups.
"Most public accesses in the southern half of Minnesota will be in good condition and open for use," said Nancy Stewart, coordinator of the DNR's Public Water Access Program. "Some lakes in the northern half of the state may still have ice, which poses a challenge in making repairs."
Stewart said repairs are running about two weeks behind.
It's not ice but high water levels on the Mississippi River that led to the closing of public access at Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park. Anoka County and Three Rivers Park District officials said they can't place buoys in the river above the dam to mark the river for boaters. It's unlikely to reopen in time for the opener, said Jeff Perry, parks operations manager. An alternate boat launch is farther up stream near Akin Riverside Park, he said.
