Crash west of Northfield kills 1 motorist

A 90-year-old Northfield, Minn., man died after a head-on crash Wednesday afternoon in Northfield.

The Minnesota State Patrol identified Glenn E. Nelson as the man who died after the car he was driving hit another vehicle.

The driver of the other car was Eric J. Ruger, 37, of Montgomery, Minn. He was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he was in critical condition Wednesday night.

At 3:41 p.m., Nelson's vehicle was traveling eastbound on Hwy. 19 near Ebel Avenue. It crossed the center line and hit Ruger's vehicle head-on. Hwy. 19 was closed for several hours after the crash but reopened around 6:15.

The intersection of Highway 19 and Ebel Avenue is about 2 miles west of St. Olaf College in Northfield.
