Injuries from Nov. 21 accident prove fatal to man, 71.

A 71-year-old Minneapolis man who was hit by a Metro Mobility vehicle nearly two weeks ago has died, authorities said.

Ali Y. Muse died Saturday night at Hennepin County Medical Center of head injuries from the Nov. 21 accident, according to the medical examiner's office.

That afternoon, Muse, who lives less than half a mile from where he was struck, was walking in a crosswalk at Olson Hwy. and Oak Lake Avenue, police said.

After a green arrow illuminated, giving traffic turning left the right of way, the car went from eastbound Olson Hwy. onto northbound Oak Lake and hit Muse in the crosswalk, said a witness who was driving behind the Metro Mobility car and also turning left.

"Out of the corner of my eye I saw the pedestrian in the crosswalk about halfway across," said Daniel Miles, of Minneapolis. The next thing Miles saw, he said, was "the person lying in the street."

The Metro Mobility driver stopped immediately and called 911, Miles said. Police identified the driver as Carl A. Monson, 60, of Blaine.

"He said he didn't even see him," Miles said. "The driver was devastated. He said he has been driving for years and never experienced anything like it."

The Metro Mobility car was not transporting a passenger at the time, said spokeswoman Bonnie Kollodge of the Metropolitan Council, which operates the transportation service for the disabled.

The driver is a 10-year employee of Transit Team Inc., which contracts with Metro Mobility to provide service. He was subject to alcohol and drug testing, which is standard procedure, Kollodge said.
