A man from Richfield died Friday night after he went underwater when his canoe capsized earlier in the day at Snelling Lake in Fort Snelling State Park.

Another man who also fell in the lake swam to shore and was treated at the scene, said Lisa Kiava, a spokeswoman for the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office.

Kiava said the pair were fishing when their canoe capsized. A call came in to police dispatchers at 8:40 a.m. The police and fire departments at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport responded, along with the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office.

The firefighters put a boat out on the lake and recovered the man underwater, Kiava said. He was taken to United Hospital in critical condition. He died Friday night.

The names of the two men have not yet been released.
