The Minnesota Department of Transportation will do some spring cleaning with its annual washing of the Lowry Hill Tunnel on Monday and Tuesday nights.

Both directions of Interstate 94 in downtown Minneapolis will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Motorists will be detoured via Hennepin and Lyndale Avenues.

The closing could cause trouble for fans leaving Monday's Minnesota Twins opener at the Metrodome if the sold-out game against the Angels runs long. The game is set to start at 6:05 p.m. and could be over before the tunnel closes.

The Portland Avenue Tunnel and other smaller nearby tunnels on Interstate 94 in Minneapolis will be shut down from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday nights.

MnDOT said the closings will allow crews to remove dirt, grime and debris that have accumulated on walls during the winter.

In addition, minor repairs will be made to the tunnels, including changing filters on the ventilation system, replacing light bulbs and damaged wiring, repairing damaged pavement, and cleaning and repairing storm sewer drains.
