Ice floats on the Manitowoc River near the county Highway S bridge west of Manitowoc, Wis., on Tuesday. The river in Manitowoc was measured at 9.26 feet at 1 p.m., which is over the rivers flood stage of 9 feet, according to the National Weather Service Web site. At flood stage, the river is expected to cause widespread lowland and agricultural flooding.

There is a potential for up to six inches of snow in southern Minnesota starting late tonight and into Thursday, with the heaviest snowfall expected in the Pipestone and Worthington areas.

A year ago today spring fever was busting out all over Minnesota with bright sunny skies and record warmth, including 83 degrees in Springfield, Minn. and 81 degrees in the Twin Cities.

On the other end of the spectrum it was a bone-chilling minus 10 degrees in the Twin Cities on this date in 1996.

While there will be no high or low record temperatures set today, a bit of winter is in the forecast with the potential for up to six inches of snow in southern Minnesota starting late tonight and into Thursday, the National Weather Service said.

A low pressure system moving out of the Rocky Mountains and  across Iowa today will spread snow across South Dakota and south central Minnesota, where a Snow Advisory is in effect from late today through Thursday evening. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for all day Thursday in southeastern Minnesota where up to 4 inches of snow is expected along the I-90 corridor.

The heaviest snowfall is expected in the Pipestone and Worthington areas of southwestern Minnesota where up to nine inches of snow could fall. A Heavy Snow Warning is in effect for the area from 10 p.m. today until 1 a.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service said.

Ahead of the storm, the sun will come out and warm the air to 44 degrees today in the Twin Cities. Behind Thursday's late spring storm, some of the accumulating snow will disappear under partly sunny skies and 38 degrees.

Temperatures will climb into the low- to mid-40s Saturday through Tuesday, but another round of precipitation - white or otherwise - is possible Saturday, Monday and Tuesday.
