Entire Minneapolis Police Department is honored for bridge response

Last update: March 21, 2008 - 11:25 AM

The Minneapolis Police Department is this year's choice for the Medal of Honor, given out by the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association (MCPA).

The honor, announced Thursday by the association, is for the department's response to the I-35W bridge collapse last August near downtown Minneapolis.

This marks the first time in the award's 37-year history that it will be given to an entire department. This is the association's highest award.

In making its choice, the MCPA Award Committee considers "actions in a single event which demonstrate bravery, heroism, and/or self-sacrifice; clearly distinguishing the individual for gallantry and bravery under life-threatening circumstances."

The award will be presented on April 23, 2008 at 7 p.m. during the MCPA Executive Training Institute Annual Awards Banquet held at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center.
