The 2013 Minnesota Fallen Heroes Remembered calendars will be available later this month. The calendars feature the narratives of Minnesota natives who died in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The names in the calendar may bring back recollections of brief news stories of deaths in far-off places and pictures of warrior faces that will remain forever young, such as Army Pfc. Kham See Xiong, who was killed in the Fort Hood massacre in November 2009. The calendar's founders pledge to continue the calendar until every Minnesotan who has died has been included.

This is the fourth edition of the calendar, which this year features tributes that include Navy SEALs John Faas and Nicholas Spehar, killed in August 2011, as well as Corey Goodnature, an Army Chinook helicopter pilot who was killed in 2005 while on a combat mission in Afghanistan. Others include Jacob Fairbanks, whose family I have come to know from a series the Star Tribune did on military suicides, and Ryane Clark, whose mother met earlier this year with First Lady Michelle Obama and tearfully talked to her about her concerns that a nation easily forgets those who have died in war.

The 2013 editions will be on sale for $10 through the Bryan McDonough Military Heroes Foundation at www.military heroesfoundation.org. The money goes toward a $2 million pledge for the construction of the Fisher House at the Minneapolis Veterans Medical Center.

The calendar also is expected to be available at a Tribute to the Troops ride this weekend that culminates when hundreds of motorcyclists converge with Blue and Gold Star families for a memorial concert at the Medina Entertainment Center. More information is available at www.startribune.com/a1696.

The others in the calendar are Marine Cpl. Sean Osterman, Army Cpl. Matthew Johnson, Marine Cpl. Curtis Swenson, Marine Pfc. Matthew Milczark, West Point grad and Army 1st Lt. Christopher Goeke, and Army Specialist Joseph Kennedy.
