A construction worker suffered noncritical injuries Saturday morning in Eden Prairie when steel beams in what is to be an indoor soccer building collapsed like dominoes, according to the assistant fire chief.

The man was one of six workers who were erecting steel I-beams at 7000 Washington Av. "when the entire steel structure collapsed" about 11:40 a.m., said Assistant Fire Chief Tom Schmitz. Schmitz estimated the building is about 50 feet high and the beams were over 100 feet in length.

"We don't know what caused the collapse," he said. "But it was the domino effect -- they were all laying down in the same direction."

The city has issued a stop-work order and building officials will examine the structure Tuesday, Schmitz said.
