A 68-year-old woman was killed early Thursday in her home on the southern edge of St. Cloud, and her 40-year-old son, who is from Rosemount, was arrested immediately at the scene, authorities said.

Police were called to the home in the 2700 block of Atwater Drive about 12:30 a.m. and found Geraldine D. Bennett at the rear of the house with wounds from "an apparent edged weapon," according to police. An ambulance took Bennett to a hospital, where she died.

Authorities have yet to address what led to the killing. Bennett's husband was home at the time. Police said he was cooperating with the investigation of his stepson.

The son is being held in the Stearns County jail on suspicion of second-degree murder.

The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting St. Cloud police with the investigation.
