Rural communities in Minnesota will soon benefit from nearly $1 million in federal money to help create jobs and improve infrastructure and housing.
Five state organizations have won competitive awards amounting to $943,421 from the USDA Rural Development Department. It will give Minnesota the highest total in the nation, according to the Minnesota Housing Partnership, which announced the awards this week.
Other organizations getting funding are the Minnesota Homeownership Center, the Initiative Foundation, the Greater Minnesota Housing Fund and the Region Five Development Corporation.
Some of the improvements the groups proposed include helping nonprofits in Brainerd and five central Minnesota counties rehab and create housing, and helping immigrant families in southern Minnesota and other parts of the state buy homes. Money will also help complete subdivisions north of the Twin Cities where construction halted during the foreclosure crisis.
