Victim was approached while walking alone on University Avenue
A University of Minnesota student lost his wallet, but ended up with the robber's gun, said Deputy Chief Steve Johnson.
The victim handed the spring-loaded BB gun to police when they responded to the call around 3:55 a.m. Sunday. Johnson said he isn't sure how the male student ended up with the gun, but "we don't recommend reaching for that."
The student, 23, was walking eastbound on University Avenue near SE. 16th Street when the suspect approached and asked for a cigarette. The suspect then displayed a gun and demanded the student's wallet and Walkman. He resisted. The suspect got the student's wallet containing $30 and ran, but somehow left the gun behind, Johnson said.
The suspect fled to a 1998 Camry where two other men were waiting. Police found the car and it has been impounded, Johnson said.
The suspect is 20 to 29 years old, approximately 5 feet 6 inches with a thin build. He had a mustache and was wearing a black, puffy jacket and gloves, and a black knit hat with flaps that covered his ears, Johnson said.
Johnson reminded students that it's best not to resist when threatened with a weapon. He also said to be aware of one's surroundings, walk in well-lit areas and with other people, and not to carry valuables.
