Each year, America's Promise Alliance names its list of the top 100 best communities for young people. Winning cities get great press and are eligible to compete for $300,000 in grants.
Cities submit details about programming that offers the five keys America's Promise says are critical for healthy, successful children: caring adults, safe places, healthy start, effective education and opportunities to help others.
Landfall's application spotlighted after-school tutoring, health care availability, the Landfall Youth Council and a youth bicycle program, among other things.
The Minnesota communities named to the 2008 list are St. Louis Park, St. Paul, the Mankato area and Landfall. It was St. Louis Park's third win. Landfall Mayor Greg Feldbrugge flew to Washington in late January to accept the award. "It was held at the University Club, which was founded by President Taft," he said. "A very classy joint."
