Checking for illegal workers

Last update: March 2, 2008 - 9:51 PM

CHECKING FOR ILLEGAL WORKERS

What: E-Verify is an online employment verification check that helps employers determine the legal status of job applicants. The system takes the names, birth dates and Social Security numbers of job applicants and matches them to federal databases.

Who: All businesses and employers signing contracts with the state must now use it. The same goes for their subcontractors and branch offices around the country. The federal government will require the same of their contractors soon.

Questions: For information on Minnesota's new mandate, go to www.startribune.com/a4082. For general information on E-Verify, call 1-888-464-4218.
