Nothing says summer more than the sound of a loon, Minnesota's state bird, resonating over one of its thousands of lakes. On Lake Elora, near Canyon, northwest of Duluth, for the first time in recent memory, loons have nested and are successfully raising a chick. Chicks can leave the nest a day after birth, according to the National Audubon Society, but they often ride on the backs of their mothers and cannot fly for their first three months.
