Starbucks is taking a 3 1/2-hour coffee break tonight.
In a sweeping move to "energize partners and transform the customer experience," the coffee giant will suspend operations from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. local time at its 7,100 company-operated stores nationwide, the company's CEO Howard Schultz said.
While the stores are closed, more than 135,000 baristas and managers will undergo extensive training and re-training that will include how to wipe the steamer wands and how to remember to rinse the pitchers and shot glasses every time.
"The comprehensive educational curriculum for all U.S. store partners will provide a renewed focus on espresso standards that will help ensure the exceptional quality of every beverage," Schultz said earlier this month when he announced the mandatory training. "[Employees] will be trained in creating the perfect shot, steaming the milk and all the pieces that come together in a drink."
Schultz says it's part of his refocusing on the coffee customer experience.
Starbucks stores that have evening hours will reopen at 9 p.m.
Starbucks counters in stores such as Targets, Barnes and Nobles and airports will remain open tonight.
In a move to lure coffee drinkers into its stores, Dunkin Donuts locations are offering lattes and cappuccinos for 99 cents from 1 to 10 p.m. today.
