Come on in, the water's fine again at Harriet beach

Whatever was in the water at Lake Harriet's Southeast Beach has gone somewhere else.

The beach reopened at noon Thursday, despite the stormy weather, after water samples showed that the high bacteria levels had subsided to well within safety guidelines.

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board blamed recent heavy rain and hot weather for boosting the levels of E. coli bacteria to unsafe levels. The beach was closed Tuesday after the E. coli levels clocked in at a whopping 2,420 -- nearly twice the safety limit. When retested Wednesday, it had dropped to a reassuring 4.
