Czech your calendar: Today is Masopust!

Last update: February 5, 2008 - 8:39 AM

It's a little cold in Montgomery, Minn., for townfolk there to put on a Mardi Gras celebration similar to the bawdy bash associated with New Orleans, but the Le Sueur County city is revving up just the same for Masopust.

Masopust is the Czech version of Mardi Gras. In Montgomery, where a Czech heritage dates to the mid-1800s, the festivities start at 5 tonight at the American Legion hall.

This year's eighth annual Masopust will feature a silent auction, costumed ball, the crowning of a Masopust king, costume contests and a traditional Czech skit.

Translated, Masopust means "good-bye to meat."

Sorry, no tossing of beads from balconies.
