Pollution alert includes Twin Cities

THE LATEST: Poor air quality has prompted the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency to issue a pollution health advisory for the southern half of the state, including the Twin Cities. Today is the second day of the alert.

Stagnant air levels "unhealthy for sensitive groups" were detected in the Rochester area on Monday, according to a news release. The problem is caused by fine particles, such as soot, from car tailpipes, power plants and fireplaces.

PRECAUTIONS: During air pollution alerts those with heart or lung disease, children and the elderly should avoid prolonged exertion. Healthy adults should consider reducing or postponing strenuous exercise.

HOW LONG: Officials expect the alert to continue through Wednesday. They are urging people to conserve electricity, drive less and avoid wood fires.
