Home | Local + Metro | The I-35W bridge collapse
The first concrete support for the new Interstate 35W bridge is rising from the foundation on the bank of the Mississippi River, one of the visible signs of progress on the project.
Much of the construction so far has focused on 109 foundation shafts that were drilled 30 to 95 feet deep and filled with steel-reinforced concrete. The 40 deeper shafts are completed, and others are underway.
Last week, workers completed the first of 120 concrete bridge superstructure segments for the main span, which are being pre-cast on the site. They will eventually be joined with massive steel tendons.
About 130 to 150 workers are now on the site, and the number will probably reach 600.
