Friday's high temperature of 93 set a Twin Cities record for the date.

Though the previous record of 91 had stood since 1911, it was one of the two lowest daily high temperature records between May 13 and 31. The other one, 88 degrees on May 23, is likely to survive another year. The forecast high for Wednesday is 77.

Morris and Madison, in western Minnesota, both reached 97 Friday. In Duluth, the temperature at the harbor dropped from 81 to 57 in 20 minutes over the lunch hour as winds blew in off Lake Superior. The official high was 87 at the Duluth International Airport, away from the lake.

Saturday also is expected to be warm in the Twin Cities, with a high of 87, followed by showers and a rapid cooldown to 69 Sunday.

Highs in the 90s in May are not uncommon in the Twin Cities. Though last year had none, the previous two Mays had two each, including a 97 on May 19, 2009, which was the hottest day of that year.
