About a dozen people had to leave their homes in brutally cold weather Tuesday evening after a fire broke out on the top floor of a south Minneapolis apartment building, authorities said.
The cold weather made fighting the fire more dangerous to crews outside, and a fierce wind blowing into the building gave the fire an extra boost of oxygen, said Deputy Chief Mike Dickinson.
No one was hurt in the fire on the 3200 block of Lyndale Avenue S., he said. The fire started on the northwest side of the top floor, causing a lot of smoke damage, Dickinson said.
The families of the nine-unit building will be sheltered by the Red Cross, he said.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
