A 20-year-old man from northern Minnesota was charged Thursday in Wednesday's stabbing death of a 22-year-old man from Walker, Minn., according to the Cass County Sheriff's Office.

Sheldon James Smith was charged with second-degree murder.

The victim, whose name has not been released pending notification of relatives, was stabbed in the chest late Wednesday near Onigum, northeast of Walker, according to the Cass County Sheriff's Office.

Smith stabbed the victim during an encounter between two groups, then fled the scene with his companions, according to Cass County Attorney Christopher Strandlie. The victim died on the way to a hospital.

Smith was arrested early Thursday. His next court appearance is set for April 2.
