Elderly warned of scam: Send money or relative goes to jail

Last update: January 11, 2008 - 12:32 PM

At least seven reports in Minnesota of a money-bilking scam targeting the elderly prompted state officials today to warn the public about them and to "report these frauds so authorities can track down the offenders."

In one case, an Olmsted County woman lost $7,000, the state Department of Public Safety said.

According to the department:

The scam begins with a phone call from someone claiming to be the victim's grandchild or other close relative. The caller claims to be in trouble in Canada and needs to pay a fine. Otherwise, they say, they'll be jailed.

The caller then asks the victim not to discuss the matter with his or her parents for fear of angering them.

"These frauds are devastating for the victims, and the people behind them know how to con vulnerable citizens," said John Willems, special agent in-charge of the state's Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement Division. "It's critical [that] Minnesotans recognize and report these frauds so authorities can track down the offenders."

Officials are urging anyone who knows of suspected fraudulent letters, e-mails or phone calls targeting the elderly to report them immediately to the Minnesota Board on Aging LinkAge line (1-800-333-2433) or notify law local law enforcement. Reports can also be sent to DPS.ReportFraud@state.mn.us.
