Work atop IDS Tower means street closing downtown

Last update: January 11, 2008 - 11:12 PM

Work 57 stories above means the closing of a downtown Minneapolis street over the weekend.

The city is closing S. 8th Street from LaSalle to Marquette avenues during the day Saturday and Sunday, with that stretch reopening at 6 each evening.

While the street is closed, crews will start replacing seven large cooling towers atop the 57-story IDS Center.

Cranes on the roof will lower the current towers all the way down and later lift new towers to the roof.

Access to IDS Center offices and retail outlets in Crystal Court will be available from Nicollet Mall, 7th Street and Marquette Avenue.

Police will be on hand to redirect vehicles and pedestrians in the area.

This work may mean the same process may be necessary for a handful more weekends, weather permitting.
