A Bayport man was killed on Sunday morning when he pulled his vehicle out onto a county road near Interstate 94 in West Lakeland Township, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

As he turned from westbound Hudson Road onto Stagecoach Trail about 10 a.m., he was struck by a northbound vehicle. The 72-year-old man, whose name has not been released, was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the other vehicle and a passenger were also taken to the hospital. The driver of the other vehicle appeared to be in stable condition, according to Sgt. Sara Halverson, but the passenger's condition was not released.

Earlier in the weekend, a Minnesota man was killed on Hwy. 61 along Lake Superior early Friday afternoon after he slowed to turn into a rest stop near Split Rock River and was hit from behind.

The man's Mini Cooper was pushed into ongoing traffic and was broadsided by a semitrailer truck. The car burst into flames, and the man died at the scene.

He has not been identified and an investigation is underway, State Patrol Lt. Eric Roeske said.

The Mini Cooper was rear-ended by a car carrying a Mark and Karen Reed, of Abilene, Texas. The husband, who was driving, wasn't injured. His wife's injuries were not life-threatening.

The truck was driven by James R. Hawkinson, of Elk River, who was treated and released. All three survivors were wea seat belts. It was not known whether the man who died had one on as well.
