The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an air pollution alert for most of Minnesota. The alert will be in effect today through Friday.
The agency issued the alert due to elevated levels of fine airborne particles. The worst air quality is expected in places such as Rochester and the Twin Cities, the MPCA said.
The advisory also includes Brainerd, Duluth and St. Cloud where pollution won't be as severe.
Stagnant air is helping to trap fine particles, which are expected to build throughout the week. The air quality index hit 103 this morning in Rochester and 92 in the Twin Cities, where it might climb to near 100 today.
Air quality readings in the 90s are near the threshold that is deemed unhealthy for people with respiratory, cardiovascular and heart conditions, as well as senior citizens, children and active adults.
To help reduce air pollution, the MPCA encourages people to drive less, reduce electricity use, avoid the use of small engines and postpone outdoor fires.
