Minnesotans who have been turned down for health insurance because of pre-existing conditions may seek help from either a federal or a state program.

Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan

This federal program offers coverage to anyone turned down by a commercial insurer or who has a doctor's statement describing the medical condition, illness or disability. Applicants must be uninsured six months before becoming eligible. As of March 31, 37 Minnesotans were enrolled. For information, call 1-866-717-5825 (TTY 1-866-561-1604), or go to www.pcip.gov and click on "find your state."

Minnesota Comprehensive Health Association

Offers similar coverage but does not require six months without insurance. However, pre-existing conditions are not covered for six months. About 27,000 Minnesotans are enrolled. For information, call 1-866-894-8053 (TTY 1-800-855-2880 and ask for the previous number), or go to www.mchamn.com.
