Teen shot outside Roosevelt High School

Shooting took place in the high school parking lot

Last update: December 8, 2007 - 12:55 AM

Minneapolis police are trying to find out who shot a 19-year-old man Thursday night outside of Roosevelt High School and why.

Shots rang out abut 9 p.m. in the parking lot of the school at 4029 28th Av. S. as a girls' basketball game was being played inside the gym.

Police confirm that a man was hit by a bullet in the cheek and taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. He is expected to be released from the hospital today, said Sgt. Jesse Garcia, a Minneapolis Police Department spokesman.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was not a Roosevelt student and there is no indication that anybody involved is affiliated with Roosevelt, said Ross Bennett, a spokesman for the Minneapolis Public Schools.

It's not clear whether the shooting is related to an incident that happened during the Teddies' game against St. Paul Johnson. Bennett said at one point during the game a "group of people were asked to leave" the gym for security reasons.

Craig Vana, assistant superintendent of emergency response and crisis management for the school district, said the man who was shot had been attending the basketball game.
