Lots of thermometers across the state recorded negative numbers overnight, including a record-setting minus 15 degrees in St. Cloud, Minn. That beat the previous all-time low of minus 14 set in 1926.
But the mercury sank even lower in places such as Ely, Eveleth, Bigfork, Pine River -- all checking in at minus 17 degrees.
Other cold spots included Moose Lake at minus 18 degrees, Brainerd at minus 19 degrees, Aitkin and Mora at minus 20 degrees, and Hibbing at minus 22 degrees. The bone-chilling cold award goes to Embarrass, which recorded a temperature of minus 24 degrees, the National Weather Service said.
In the Twin Cities metro area, the mercury dropped below zero in many places, including Crystal, Blaine, Eden Prairie, St. Paul, Chaska and Lakeville.
Today, temperatures in the Twin Cities will rebound to near 20 degrees, but wind chills will be near zero. A fast-moving system passing through Iowa is likely to bring snow this afternoon, with up to 2 inches possible in the Twin Cities and heavier amounts to the south, the Weather Service said.
Snow will end by tonight and sunny skies will return Friday before another round of snow moves in on Saturday. The high on Friday will be 16 degrees with a low of minus 7 degrees in the Twin Cities.
The cold will continue at least through Monday, with highs Saturday and Sunday in the single digits above zero to the low teens and lows right around zero, the Weather Service said.
A slight warm-up is forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday with a high of 28 degrees expected.
