Today is "World Day for Prevention of Child Abuse," and Minnesotans are coming together this afternoon in St. Paul to do their part.

The Jacob Wetterling Foundation is helping organize an event starting at 4 p.m. at Neighborhood House at the Paul and Sheila Wellstone Center for Community Building, 179 E. Robie St.

Activities include sharing information "on the best ways to protect children in your own home, neighborhood, and greater community," the foundation said in a news release.

Also, there will be a short program on "Making a Commitment to Children" with a chance for everyone present to fill out their own "Commitment to Children" card to post on a community banner, the foundation added.

The foundation said several dignitaries will participate, among them: U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., U.S. Attorney Rachel Paulose and Michael Campion, the state's commissioner of public safety.

The Women's World Summit Foundation chose Nov. 19 to focus on prevention of child abuse and to increase the public's awareness of how to help.

Joining the Jacob Wetterling Foundation in marking the day in Minnesota are the National Association to Prevent Sexual Abuse of Children, Neighborhood House and Prevent Child Abuse Minnesota.

This afternoon's event is open to the public.
