A 12-year-old Wisconsin boy skiing with his church group at Duluth's Spirit Mountain died Friday afternoon in an apparent accident on the slopes.

Duluth police say the boy, whose name has not been released, was found at 4:15 p.m. lying on the ground in a tree line about halfway down a run by Ski Patrol officers, who called 911 and tried to resuscitate him. The boy was not breathing and had suffered "obvious trauma," police said in a prepared statement.

He was taken by Gold Cross Ambulance to Essentia Health St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, where he was pronounced dead at 4:50 p.m.

Jim Hansen, public information officer for the Duluth police, said the boy was from Grantsburg, Wis.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicates that the boy's death was an accident. Any witnesses are asked to call Duluth police at 1-218-730-5050.
