As of 2000, the most recent year for which figures can be broken down this minutely, the hot spots for predawn commutes were neighborhoods in and around the city of Isanti (1,100 predawn commuters, or 24 percent of all commuters) and Zimmerman, in Sherburne County (1,321; 21 percent). Similar, though smaller, numbers were recorded in and around Winsted, Waverly and Otsego.
At the other end of the spectrum, the fewest such commuters were in affluent city neighborhoods such as St. Paul's Crocus Hill; Minneapolis east of Lake Harriet; student- and professor-dominated areas near the University of Minnesota and Macalester College, and a sprinkling of close-in suburbs such as Edina and Arden Hills.
