The St. Paul Schools received a six-month, $155,000 planning grant to begin closing the achievement gap between white students and African and black students. According to Superintendent Meria Carstarphen, here are the next steps:
Defining beliefs about African and black students.
Assessing strengths, weaknesses and gaps in education and support of African and African-American students in St. Paul and St. Paul Public Schools.
Engaging the community in planning, including identifying which students will be helped most by the initiative.
Creating a five-year plan with goals, strategies and partnerships to engage and educate students and their families.
Sharing the plan and implementation with the community.
The grant is from the Robins, Kaplan, Miller and Ciresi LLP Foundation for Education, Public Health and Social Justice.
