The St. Paul Schools received a six-month, $155,000 planning grant to begin closing the achievement gap between white students and African and black students. According to Superintendent Meria Carstarphen, here are the next steps:

• Defining beliefs about African and black students.

• Assessing strengths, weaknesses and gaps in education and support of African and African-American students in St. Paul and St. Paul Public Schools.

• Engaging the community in planning, including identifying which students will be helped most by the initiative.

• Creating a five-year plan with goals, strategies and partnerships to engage and educate students and their families.

• Sharing the plan and implementation with the community.

The grant is from the Robins, Kaplan, Miller and Ciresi LLP Foundation for Education, Public Health and Social Justice.
