The prognosis is encouraging for the last surviving Morrison sextuplet, a Minneapolis hospital official said this morning.

Sylas Morrison, born with five siblings nearly four months ago, is "progressing well" and should be "going home soon," said Allison Sandve, spokeswoman for Children's Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota.

Many very preterm infants never leave the hospital, and among those who do, there are often developmental problems, cerebral palsy and other chronic conditions. At the Morrison family's direction, the hospital was releasing no other information today about Sylas' health.

Noemi Hedrick photographed Sylas and posted the pictures on her website (see www.startribune.com/a3460). Hedrick wrote last week on her blog that "Ryan and Brianna are ... excited to be bringing Sylas home soon. That's what they focusing on right now."

Sylas was left as the lone surviving sextuplet when his sister, Lucia Rae, died July 22. She was one of two girls and four boys born on June 10, four and a half months prematurely, to Brianna and Ryan Morrison of St. Louis Park.

Three of the boys (Bennet Ryan, Tryg Brenton and Lincoln Sean) died within a week of birth, and a girl (Cadence Alana) died June 23.

On Monday, Sylas also reached a milestone of sorts. Monday would have "roughly [been] the due date" for Brianna Morrison if she were having a single-child birth, Sandve said.

The six were born in the 22nd week of gestation by Caesarean section at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, weighing from just under 11 ounces to about 1 pound, 3 ounces.

The couple used fertility drugs to become pregnant.
