YOUR GUIDE TO THE TWIN CITIES
A once-abandoned building now houses a nonprofit, a credit union and a coffeehouse. But its most important tenant is likely a renewed optimism.
The renovated red-brick two-story corner structure with the tall windows in the heart of north Minneapolis could not look less like its dilapidated former self. Nor is it very recognizable inside, with its fancy light fixtures, eye-catching artwork and flat-screen computers. Expectations are high for the once-abandoned building at 1101 W. Broadway, which now houses a nonprofit, a credit union and a coffeehouse. More than 100 people attended Thursday's grand opening of the $4 million redevelopment, which includes Emerge Community Development, a nonprofit that provides job training and housing opportunities and a City-County Federal Credit Union branch. The site is part of the city's effort to transform West Broadway into a vibrant commercial and cultural corridor over the next 15 years. The push could require tens of millions of dollars from public, private and nonprofit investments.
