YOUR GUIDE TO THE TWIN CITIES
DULUTH The goo balls are back.
Gobs of clear gelatinous goo have started to pop up in an around Lake Superior in Duluth this month.
Scientists were initially baffled by the balls when they first started appearing in 2001. But they determined that the pea-sized balls are cast-off shells of a species of zooplankton.
Experts are getting reports of sightings all around the lake from Minnesota to Michigan. They say the balls are harmless.
Scientists are still trying to figure out why the shells only show up in some years.
