Anoka County today became the second Minnesota county to pass a wheelage tax.

Under the tax, vehicle owners would have to pay $5 per vehicle, with money going to improve county roads.

Last week, Dakota County became the first county to pass this tax.

County Commissioner Dennis Berg said that 5,000 crashes are projected this year in Anoka County, and that seven people have been killed on county roads since the first of the year. The hope is that money used to improve roads will cut down accidents and fatalities.
