The International Bazaar will have a new and larger look when the 2008 Minnesota State Fair opens.

Crews on Thursday began demolishing the current structure to make room for an expanded facility with additional amenities, fair officials said.

When it is completed, the new International Bazaar will be nearly 50 percent larger than its current space and will have room for 120 concession and exhibit spaces, a free entertainment space, restrooms and additional off-season event capacity.

Originally built with wood in 1970 and named the Mexican Village, the bazaar is a mecca for shoppers looking for international clothing, jewelry, merchandise, multi-cultural cuisine and ethnic entertainment.

The fair changed its name to the International Bazaar in 1984 to better reflect the global makeup of the vendors and products sold in the 37,500-square-foot space on Judson Avenue.
