Minority students urged to pursue science, technology

Last update: September 19, 2007 - 7:24 PM

Led by the University of Minnesota, a statewide group of colleges and universities has been given a new charge: Encourage more minority students to earn science and engineering degrees.

On Wednesday, the National Science Federation announced that 16 schools along with the Science Museum of Minnesota and the Minnesota High Tech Association will receive a $2.45 million grant to accomplish that goal. The recipients include a mix of schools ranging from North Hennepin Community College to St. Cloud State to the University of Minnesota-Duluth to Carleton and Macalester colleges.

The grant is part of the NSF's Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation program.

The goal is to double the number of degrees earned by minority members in science, technology, engineering and math programs.
