3M Co., the corporate giant based in Maplewood, has operated a factory on the Mississippi River in Cottage Grove for 60 years. Once known as the 3M Chemolite plant, it has produced some of the company's best-known products, such as Scotchgard Fabric Protector and adhesive for Post-It Notes.
Until 2002, the plant manufactured and used perfluorochemicals (PFCs) and disposed of them in a number of ways, including incineration, burial and treated wastewater that was discharged into the Mississippi River. As the chemicals' effects on the environment and health come under increasing scrutiny, 3M has agreed to clean up the contamination.
