Reporter Kevin Diaz and photographer Elizabeth Flores heard talk of Axochiapans migrant link to Minnesota and decided to take a closer look. They started with Twin Cities church, consulate and business leaders who had connections there.
Eventually, their reporting took them to Axochiapan, where they visited municipal officials, civic leaders and the families of immigrants who live in Minnesota. Most of their interviews were conducted in Spanish and translated into English. Immigrants in the United States illegally, and their families, shared their stories on the condition that they be identified only by first name.
