NTSB: More time needed for probe of bridge collapse

Last update: October 23, 2007 - 11:23 PM

The National Transportation Safety Board said Tuesday that its on-scene investigation of the Interstate 35W bridge collapse is expected to continue through late November. Earlier, the agency said its field work would likely end by the start of November.

In its fourth official update since the disaster, the independent federal agency said relevant bridge components are being kept at a site along West River Parkway just downstream from where the bridge fell on Aug. 1.

Key sections of the bridge carcass will be shipped to NTSB offices on the East Coast when the on-scene work is concluded, NTSB Chairman Mark Rosenker said.

Investigators are using computer modeling to try to find what led to the failure of the nearly 2,000-foot-long steel truss bridge that opened in 1967. The analysis is likely to take 12 to 18 months.
