Many ways to make a doctor

Last update: October 5, 2007 - 8:13 PM

Under the University of Minnesota's "Flexible MD" program, students can take up to six years to finish medical school. It's about tailoring the education to the individual, with the hope of attracting more people to medical school and producing more well-rounded doctors.

So far, medical students have taken advantage of the program and taken time away from the classroom to do laboratory research, work in a clinic in Ecuador and do advocacy work on Capitol Hill, among other activities.

To graduate, each student still must fulfill 13 educational objectives in areas such as patient care, medical knowledge, interpersonal and communication skills, and professionalism.
