U to offer class centered on bridge collapse

  • Updated: September 7, 2007 - 8:00 PM

The University of Minnesota has created a new class that will focus on the collapse of the Interstate 35W bridge.

The urban studies class will be called "The River, the Bridge, the Community: Beyond the Headlines of the I-35W Bridge Collapse."

The class will tackle issues such as transportation and community and will look at rebuilding the bridge and the area to last a long time.

The course will touch on engineering questions and new bridge design.

Students also will learn about the river as an ecosystem with its own plant and animal communities and physical attributes. The collapse itself may have affected water quality, another angle for scientific inquiry.
