Does the IRS owe you a refund? Here's the list

The tax agency released a list of Minnesotans whose tax refunds were returned by the post office as undeliverable.

This could be your lucky day. The Internal Revenue Service just released its list of Minnesota taxpayers whose federal refund checks were returned because of mailing address errors. Nearly 1,300 Minnesota taxpayers are due to receive a combined $1.3 million in federal refund checks.

Undeliverable refund checks for Minnesotans are higher this year, averaging $1,009 compared with $778 in 2008.

The higher average amount can be explained by new tax credits such as the first-time home buyer credit that are benefitting taxpayers.

Nationally, 107,831 taxpayers have a combined $124 million in returned refund checks owed to them.

Taxpayers can update their addresses with the "Where's My Refund?" tool on IRS.gov. To use the tool, taxpayers will need their Social Security number, filing status and amount of refund shown on their 2008 return.

Taxpayers can also access a telephone version of "Where's My Refund?" by calling 1-800-829-1954.

The IRS encourages e-filing and direct deposit to eliminate lost, stolen, or undeliverable checks in future tax years.
