• You have a real attachment to your car.
• The car can't be replaced and no other models suit you.
• The engine burned out due to a maintenance mistake or neglect; the car is newer and has a reliable repair history.
• A vehicle, such as a van, is used for business and carries signs or built-in toolboxes.
• You're still making payments.
WHEN TO STEER CLEAR
• Your vehicle has a poor reliability record in Consumer Reports.
• Your vehicle has been poorly maintained.
• Body rust.
• After 150,000 miles, the transmission and other expensive parts also might need replacement.
• Your car might be worth less than the cost of engine replacement.
