How i got my job: Brian Hissong, 36, MInneapolis

Last update: January 10, 2008 - 6:08 PM

Job: Match support coordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities (BBBS)

Salary: Mid-$30,000

Family: Married with a 3-year-old son

How did you got your job? I was a stay-at-home dad during my son's first year. During that time, I was looking for a part-time job that offered very flexible hours, but was still challenging and fun. I learned of the position with BBBS on the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits website. I submitted my résumé, completed two interviews and was offered the position. After one year, I became a full-time employee.

Education: Bachelor's degree in psychology from Manchester College, Manchester, Ind.

What do you do? BBBS matches young people ages 7 to 13 with adult volunteer mentors. My job is to support these special relationships. Currently, I support approximately 100 matches. I maintain regular contact with all participants, ensuring a positive mentoring experience for everyone involved. I also plan activities and events, and train new volunteers.

Previous experience: Prior to working at BBBS, I [had a contract with] a local county to provide case management services. I was also a manager and eventually a director at a company that provided in-home and residential services to individuals with developmental disabilities.

What do you get out of your job? This is the most satisfying and rewarding job that I ever have had. On a daily basis, I have the opportunity to interact with so many interesting people. Our volunteers are an amazing group of people from all walks of life. In addition, I get satisfaction from seeing the positive impacts that this organization has on the lives of young people in our community.

Hobbies: I enjoy spending time with my family, camping, hiking, canoeing, cross-country skiing, traveling and playing guitar.

Describe the perfect retirement: One in which I'm not eating dog food and living in a cardboard box. Of course, I would like to be comfortable. I hope I can work and stay active well past my retirement.

What kind of person would be a good fit for this job? Not every person is cut out for nonprofit work. You don't get paid what you would at a big corporation, and sometimes that can be frustrating. However, a person seeking a job that provides meaning to their life as well as to others would be happy at BBBS. In addition, a person who doesn't enjoy being excessively managed and enjoys planning activities would really enjoy working here.

Tips for interviewing: Don't be unsure of yourself and always be authentic.

Other than yours, whose job do you wish you had? Any park ranger in northern Minnesota.
