Money talk is taboo. Surveys show Americans would rather discuss sex than finances.

Most of us owe money to someone, be it a bank, a parent, or a credit card company. But we rarely talk about it. We don't know when our neighbor is living on borrowed money; we have no idea when collection agencies are calling a colleague.

This series began as a search for a few Minnesotans with money questions. The idea was to pair them with financial advisers, helping them -- and our readers -- with their money matters.

Everyone who responded, no matter age, sex, or walk of life, had one thing in common: debt. Four individuals were brave enough to tell their stories. And three financial experts were generous enough with their time to help our families combat their money issues and the surrounding psychological ones.

During the next year, we'll follow the households as they try to climb out of debt and secure their future.
